James Melton Ellis is the son of George Ellis and Kittiniah B. Gillock Ellis. He married Sarah Jane Greer January 24, 1862 in Barren co., Ky. They had at least nine children.

James and Sarah Greer Ellis are buried in the Ellis Cemetery on the old John and Elizabeth Chapman Ellis farm. By the latter part of the 1900s, thirty tombstones were able to be found and read, and the farm was owned by Kenneth Mattingly.
