A Hoke County native, Dr. Cardwell was born October 2, 1922, the daughter of Calvin Foster and Mary Belle Clarke McBryde. She graduated from Raeford High School and received her B.A., M.A. and PhD degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Cardwell served over thirty-two years in the capacity of teacher, principal and administrator in the public schools. After her retirement from public education she operated Cardwell Realty for twenty years. She was a member of Madison United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for over twenty years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of forty nine years, Thomas Vaughn Cardwell; two infant children, Mary Vaughn and Mark Foster Cardwell; two sisters and one brother.
