Professional Football Coach. For six seasons (1973 to 1978), he served as head coach of the Oklahoma State University Cowboys. He played collegiate football under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant at Texas A&M, prior to beginning his coaching career, initially at the high school level. Stanley was serving as Oklahoma State's defensive coordinator, when he was elevated to head coach and during his tenure, the Cowboys clinched the Fiesta Bowl Game in 1974 and shared the Big Eight crown in 1976 culminating with the Tangerine Bowl title. He compiled a 35 win, 31 loss, 1 tie record while with Oklahoma State. Stanley moved onto the professional level as head coach of Michigan's franchise in the United States Football League and guided the Panthers to the USFL Championship Title in 1983. He would have stints on the coaching staffs of the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Oilers, prior to serving as director of player personnel with the Arizona Cardinals. Throughout his coaching career, Stanley earned the respect of his peers with his highly-effective defensive strategies. He died following a two-year battle with cancer.
