Little is known about James Wells / Welles prior to his marriage to Persis Earle on 21 Dec 1810 in Chester, Windsor Co., Vermont. His birthday of 13 Mar 1792 was obtained from his headstone. Census records of his children provide a birthplace of both New Hampshire and Connecticut. A descendant's DNA confirms James has a 'common ancestor' with Thomas Welles, Governor of Connecticut, however, the link has not been found as yet. James and Persis children include:
Clarissa Maria Wells b: 20 Sep 1812 in Windsor Co., Vermont.
Francis James Wells b: 16 Sep 1813 in Windsor Co., Vermont
James Fones Wells b: 11 Mar 1814 in New York
Eunice K Wells b: 2 Jul 1818 in New York
Martha T Wells b: 17 Sep 1821 in New York
Justus O Wells b: 18 Dec 1823 in Vermont
Charles K Wells b: 2 Jan 1826 in New York
James Wells b: 7 Feb 1828 in New York d: 8 Nov 1887 in Waldron, Hillsdale Co., Michigan
William Washington Wells b: 15 Aug 1830 in Erie Co., Ohio

WELLS, JAMES, Private to Corporal, was 'drafted' at Hamilton, Madison Co., NY to serve in the War of 1812 under Captain Jehiel FELT and Colonel George W FLEMING's NY Militia for a period of 3-1/2 months. This data was located from two application for bounty lands while he was living in Huron Co., Ohio in 1850 and 1865. Service was substaniated by the "Commission of Pensions, Department of Interior" and land granted to him. The service in the 11th US Infantry/Cavarly has been proven to another James Wells who was born in Keene, NH and died in Sidney, OH.

James deserted his wife from about 1850 until his death on 3 Jul 1870. Based on the land applications, he stayed in the area during this time period. His wife, Persis was listed as a widow on the 1850 & 1860 census. He is buried next to his wife.

Some people have stated his father is James Wells b: c 1768 d: 8 Apr 1833 (husband of Eleanor CAMP m: 30 Nov 1797) but I have found no proof for this. I have requested source information from the tree owners. They do have a son, James Camp Wells, but his birthday is 1799 rather than 1792, plus the marriage is 1796.
