James Thomas Huggins was the son of Thomas and Maria Huggins.

In 1866 he immigrated to the United States. He married Sarah A. Reid, daughter of Robert and Mary (Blakeley) Reid, in the late 1860s or early 1870s, probably in or near Cincinnati. In the 1880 Cincinnati, Ohio census he is a grocer doing business at 783 Barr Street.

James and Sarah's children:
1. Arthur Wilson Huggins (1874 OH - 1963 FL)
2. Clarence Walter Huggins (1875 OH - 1955 FL)
3. Miller James Huggins (1878 OH - 1929 NY)
4. Myrtle Marie Huggins - Myrtle Marie Huggins was born in Cincinnati on November 15, 1882. She was the last-born child of James T. and Sarah A. (Reid) Huggins. She was described as a sweet, kind woman. She remained single throughout her life. Myrtie, as she was called, had an especially close bond with her brother Miller. She lived with him, cooked and cleaned for him, and in return Miller took care of her, too. On November 2, 1938 she died in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her death is speculated a suicide, its cause from ingesting poison. Her estate was litigated in Florida's supreme court in June 1943.

Sarah (Reid) Huggins died in June 1896 at about 48 years old. She is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery with her husband, their sons Miller and Arthur, their daughter Myrtie, and her Reid sisters.

James stressed to his children the importance of education and insisted his children attend good schools.
