Lived and raised his family in Murray City with his first wife Huldah Burnard, when she died he moved to Lansing near his father John Lantz. They worked in the coal mines at Lansing. His second wife was Elizabeth Armstrong Parks. She was previously married to Edward Parks buried in the Murray City cemetery. Ed was killed in the Lansing coal mine and James pulled his body out of the mine.
