Major League Baseball Player. The son of immigrants from Hungary, he played Major League baseball as an outfielder for nine seasons (1934 to 1941, 1943) with the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. He spend a good portion of his career as a starter, and had his best years in 1936 with the Browns and 1937 with the Indians, hitting 17 and 20 home runs, respectively, and knocking in 134 runs batted in for St. Louis. While a rookie with the Red Sox in 1934 he hit for the cycle. In August 1940 he was struck in the head with a thrown ball during warm-ups at Griffith Stadium in Washington, DC and suffered a fractured skull and optic nerve damage that would cause him to go permanently blind two years later. His career totals were 938 Games played, 990 Hits, 503 Runs, 83 Home Runs and a .289 career Batting Average.
