Italian religious figure, Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of Treviso, he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome, where he obtained doctorates in philosophy and theology, and at the University of Padova, where he received a doctorate in economics. He ordained priest, on July 8, 1928.He was a faculty member of the Seminary of Treviso, from 1933 to 1946. In 1946, he became Ecclesiastical counselor of the Catholic Institute of Social Activity, in Rome. Two years later, he became a faculty member of the Pontifical Lateran Athenaeum, in Rome, a post he held until 1969 when he was promoted to rector magnifico of this institution. He kept that position until 1974. He had been made Domestic prelate, on May 5, 1951 and Protonotaryapostolic supernumerary, on January 11, 1962. From 1962-1965, he attended the Second Vatican Council, as an expert. He was instrumental in the writing of Pope John XXIII's encyclical "Pacem in terris". From September 30 to November 6, 1971, by papal appointment, he attended the Second Ordinary Assembly of World Synod of Bishops, in Vatican City. He was considered a world leading authority in social teachings of the church. While excusing him from becoming a bishop because of his advanced age, Pope John Paul II created cardinal , on May 25, 1985. He passed away in Rome. .
