Elijah Fansler was the son of Adam Fansler and Diana Lotridge, pioneer residents of Sweetser, Grant County, Indiana.

Elijah married 4 July 1866 in Grant Co. IN, Mahala Catharine Heath, the daughter of Armstead Mason Heath and Sarah Jane Miller originally from Champaign Co. OH who had moved to Grant Co. IN. They had a number of children before her death on 4 Aug 1886. Elijah remarried 7 Dec 1896 Lucinda Priscilla Kesner.

Elijah served the Union during the civil war.
He enlisted on 10/10/1861 as a Private.
On 10/10/1861 he mustered into "K" Co. IN 34th Infantry
He Re-enlisted on 12/15/1863. He was Mustered Out on 2/3/1866.

Battle of Island Number Ten, Mississippi River
Battle of Port Gibson, Missouri
Battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi
Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi
Battle of Palmito Ranch, Texas
