Alexander was the fifth of seven children born in Middlebury, IN to Sarah Scott and Rev. Alexander Sloan Bartholomew, Sr. On 29 July, 1891 in Lima, OH, Alexander, Jr. married to Esther S. Parsons of Chicago, Ill.
The couple had one son, Alexander Sloan Bartholomew III. After Alexander, Jr. died, his widow Esther remarried.

Much sadness was caused in Springdale Saturday by a telegram announcing the death of Rev. J.S. (sic) Bartholomew at his home in Chicago. He was pastor of the Lutheran church at this place from its organization up to a few months ago when he resigned and accepted a charge in Chicago."
