Shelley Sperling was a teenager who lived in Mahopac, New York, which is approximately 45 minutes away from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Shelley was a 1974 graduate of Mahopac High School. While in high school, she participated in the Concert Orchestra, Drama Club and she was a National Merit Semi-Finalist. In the Fall of 1974, Shelley entered Marist College as a 17 year-old co-ed Honors Student. She was part of a special three-year program at the school. Shelley was a quiet girl who focused on her school work, but also had many friends at the college. On February 18, 1975 she was ambushed and shot to death by her ex-boyfriend as she entered the school cafeteria. Shelley was a beautiful young girl who had associated with the wrong person. The ex-boyfriend refused to accept the fact that she wanted to terminate the relationship and had stalked and even physically attacked her with a brick on September 29, 1974, fracturing her skull and injuring her hand as she tried to defend herself. Shelley was the daughter of William and Vilma Gobbo Sperling of Ernhofer Drive, Mahopac. She was survived by two siblings, Valerie and Scott. At her father's request, the memorial service was held at Marist College so she could be in the midst of her friends and the places that meant so much to her. It has been said that Shelley haunts the college campus, especially Sheahan Hall, her former residence, the cafeteria where she was shot, and the grotto, a place where there is a memorial to all students who died while attending Marist College.
