Perthena was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Ann Eliza Freeman Simpkins from Virginia . She first married Abraham Stineman on 11 February 1864 in Crawford County, and they had Joseph, Mellie, Emma, and Sarah. After his death, on 23 August 1881 in Henry County, she married Hiram Angel and had Jay and Sherman. Widowed again in 1889, she married John Lance on 24 September 1891 in Wood County. Later, she went back to using Angel and lived with her son, Joseph Stineman, a farmer in Fulton County. At the Fulton County Farm, Perthena died from arterio-sclerosis at the age of 94 years 9 months and 18 days.
