Former Staten Islander Maude E. Bittel, 82, of Davie, Florida, a bookkeeper and devoted homemaker, church and community volunteer, died Friday at her home.

Born Maude Blessing in Hackettstown, New Jersey, she was brought to West Brighton as a child and graduated from Curtis High School. She attended Adrian (Michigan) College and Wagner College, Grymes Hill. She moved to Castleton Corners in 1950 and to Davie in 2003.

A bookkeeper, she worked at Reiman's hardware store in Castleton Corners and later for Roselle (New Jersey) Plumbing and Heating. She retired in the late 1980s.

An active member of the Girl Scout Council of New York for over sixteen years, she was a camp site director for over five years. She led Junior and Cadet troops for over fifteen years.

As a member of Castleton Hill Moravian Church, she served on the Board of Elders and was the chairwoman of the Board of Trustees. She was also a financial secretary, a relief organist, and was instrumental in the formation of the church preschool. She also was a member of the Staten Island Herb Society, the Beacon Light Chapter of the Eastern Star, and the AARP.

Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, and cake decorating. She was an avid New York Yankees fan.

Her husband of over fifty years, John Sr., died in 2008, and her son, John Jr., died in 2000.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Bevan and Claire Hager; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be held tomorrow from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a service at 10:00 a.m. in Castleton Hill Moravian Church.
Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
