SCHUYLERVILLE - Rev. Gilbert C. Fremont, 51, a native of Schuylerville, and pastor of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Geistown. Pa., died Christmas Day at Johnstown, Pa. after an extended illness. A Pontifical Mass will be celebrated at 11 am. Thursday in St. Benedict's Church and the priest's body will then be brought to Schuylerville. Funeral services will be held at Flynn Brothers Funeral Home, Gates Ave., Schuylerville Saturday at 9 a.m. and 9:30 in Notre Dame Cemetery where a solemn Requiem High Mass will be celebrated. Burial will be in the family plot in Notre Dame Cemetery.
Father Fremont is a graduate of Schuylerville High School and St. Michael's College, Toronto. He attended St. Mary's of the!West Seminary, Cincinnati; was ordained to the priesthood May 2, 1944, and served his first Mass May 14, 1944 in Notre Dame de Lourdes Church here. He served as assistant pastor at the Catholic Cathedral, Altoona, Pa., St. Joseph’s Church, Potage, Pa. He was later transferred to St. John the Baptist Church, Bellefonte, Pa., and became administrator there. In June 1955 he was named pastor of St. Aloysius’ Church. That church was dedicated Dec. 22, 1957.
He was one of 13 children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Fremont. Survivors are a brother Robert L. Fremont, Schuylerville; ten sisters, Mrs. F. D. Taylor, Mrs. Joseph Ruff, Sr., Mrs. Lewis Boex, Schuylerville; Mrs. John Ryan, Mrs. Mary Doherty, Ballston Spa; Mrs. Beatrice Meloche, Bolton Notch, Conn.; Mrs. George Mason, Corinth; Mrs. Robert Foster, Greenwich; Mrs. Jules Marogin, Del Ray Beach, Fla.; Mrs. Gordon Wright, Town of Easton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
