The Rev. Raymond Edgerton Abbitt, S.T.D., age 89, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Denton Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Though retired, Fr. Abbitt was assisting in St. Barnabas and St. David Episcopal churches in Denton.
Fr. Abbitt was born in Victoria, Va., April 12, 1912, and received his theological education at the General Theological Seminary, New York City. He was ordained to the Diaconate in 1940 in Baltimore, Md., and to the priesthood in 1941 in Sagada, Mountain Province, the Philippines. He served in the Philippines for 12 years, four of years as a prisoner of war.
From 1954 to 1958, he was an assistant at St. John's in Dallas. In 1958 he married Earluth Elaine Epting. She passed away May 8, 1990.
He was rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands, 1958-1968; rector of St. Luke's-in-the-Meadow, Fort Worth, 1968-1972; St. Paul's, Frederifsted, St. Croix, V. I., 1972-1974; rector of the Bishop Mason Retreat and Conference Center, Diocese of Dallas, 1972 until his retirement in 1978.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Travis DuPriest of Petersburg, Va., and his brother Mr. John A. Abbitt of Hockessin, Del. His brother, Mr. Alford Lee Abbitt, passed away in 1993. [Adapted from the Denton Record-Chronicle, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2002, p. 2A]

A Service of Worship and Thanksgiving for the Life of The Rev. Raymond Edgerton Abbitt, S. T. D., was held at St. David of Wales Episcopal Church, Denton, Texas on Sept. 28, 2001. The Rt. Rev. James M. Stanton, Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, officiating. Interment was in the Bishop Mason Retreat Center Mausoleum.
