"JoAnne Smith Hower, 84, of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, formerly of East Petersburg and Mifflin, PA, passed away on December 29, 2011 at Masonic Village. JoAnne was the daughter of the late Franklin and Bertha (Etka) Smith and is predeceased by brothers, Daryl and Paul Smith, and sisters, Frances Switzer and Dorothy Bennett.
JoAnne is survived by her husband of 66 years, Frederick J. Hower; three sons: Barry F. (Kathy), Daryl E. (Jeanne) and Stephen E. (Sophia Weibel); a daughter, Paula Hower Clausen (Jens); 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Prior to her extended illness, JoAnne loved to read, play bridge and entertain, and was known for her outstanding cooking and homemade pies. JoAnne worked for many years for Fulton Bank and began a career later in life selling Cadillacs for Kelly Cadillac, Lancaster, at which she excelled. JoAnne was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at John S. Sell Memorial Chapel, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown at 11:00 AM. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at a gathering immediately following the service. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Masonic Village, designated for the Alzheimer's Unit, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
