Leib "Louis" is of the first immigrant generation of my Alkes/Elkes/Elkis family from Bialystok, Russia and the only one of that generation that is known to have emigrated. He is known as Zvi Ari Leib and also carries the name Gersh in some Polish (Russian) records.
My research leads me to believe he is the son of Abram Awadia Alkes (1808-1877) and Miriam (daughter of Moshe) and the grandson of Gersh Leib of Bialystok, Russia (now Poland). He arrived through Ellis Island on May 22, 1906, meeting his son Alter Isaac on Cherry Street on the Lower East Side. Alter's father-in-law, Abraham Suckman, was the first of the extended family to emigrate and welcomed the first members of the Leib Alkes Family as they arrived.
Louis and his wife Dwoire "Dora or Debora" Rutkonitz had 6 or 7 known children, six sons and possibly a daughter, all of which were born in or near Bialystok. Information on all of their descendants are known except for the daughter, shown as Reisel on her arrival manifest. She seems to have arrived here but is not seen again in records and is not known to any of the later generations. It is possible she only traveled with the family and was not actually related. Sons emigrating to the US include Alter Isaac (Ike), Abram Awadia (Abraham), Moische (Morris), Israel (Isadore) and Chonel (Henry). The sixth son emigrated to Israel and had a son named Chaim, who a US relative actually met.
Several of the Alkes' and Suckmans relocated from the Lower East Side to Glens Falls and the families have been there for several generations now. Isadore and Morris Alkes had a large junk yard and many family members remember junk collecting adventures, including those visiting from the city.
Louis' wife Dwoire "Dora" (c1857-1949) is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Maspeth NY with Alter Isaac and other family members who settled closer to Manhattan, including Abraham Elkes (naturalized from Abram Alkes) and his wife, Jennie Olshanitsky. One son, Chonel (Henry/Harry) spelled his name as Elkis and died leaving three young daughters, and a wife named Jennie, pregnant with his son Henry. Their descendants are yet to be found.
Two Olshanitsky sisters from Bialystok married into the Alkes and Suckman families... Jennie married Abraham and Rachel married Morris Segal, whose mother was a Suckman (given name unknown) according to Ishy Alkes. (The Suckman connection to Segal is yet to be proven as Morris' death cert shows his mother to be Ann Polang. 26 Jan 2013) These families - Alkes, Suckman, Segal and Olshanitsky were all close in Bialystok I am told.

Since starting to study genealogy, I have met Alkes cousins who live in South Florida and visited Glens Falls in the summer of 2011 and met Ishy and another cousin Arnold, who owns a novelty store on Lake George. Ishy and his wife Ursula were lovely hosts. We attended Shabbot services by this Temple together and they brought me to this cemetery and gave me a wonderful tour through generations of my family.
