Born between 1771/1778 in Edgefield Co SC. Giles married Agnes Talbert about 1796, mostly likely, in Edgefield County South Carolina. He was the son of James Letcher and Malinda "Milly" [Key] Letcher. His father, James Letcher was killed in battle near Charles Town SC, on Mar 24th, 1783, and was buried on the battle field, in that area. James and Milly married Jan 6, 1771, Amherst Co VA. It is said, Giles was the grandson of Giles & Hannah [Hughes] Letcher. His Grandfather was born in Ireland about 1710.

We guess that Giles was born abt. 1773, he was not 21yrs old in 1790, and thus needed
a guardian to handle his business, Henry Key II, Milly's brother, applied for and
was approved as guardian of Giles Letcher, in 1790, these records are on file at
the SC Archives. His father was killed in the Revolutionary War 1783.

Their are only 2 known children of Giles and Agnes. John David Letcher and Stephen Tolbert Letcher. There may have been other children.

In 2002 a male descendant of Stephen Letcher and a male descendant of John D Letcher, agreed to take a genetic genealogy DNA test on their Y-Chromosome, to verify that they were related via the two sons. They took the 12 marker test, and matched perfectly, In 2014, we retested Howard and Neal's DNA, up to the 67 markers, they matched perfectly on the 12, 25, 37, and varied by a genetic distance of 2 on the 67 marker, which can be expected, as Howard is on John D's branch and Neal on Stephen's branch, the DNA down two different branches can mutate over generations. Genetic Geology, DNA testing continues to advance with each passing year.

Family lore says that Giles died while surveying lands he obtained from his service in the War of 1812, in Alabama. Said to have been killed by Creek Indians still living in the area. It is also speculated he died while in service to his country somewhere in Florida, no records are found after 1816. Agnes fulfilled her husbands desire to relocate from SC to AL, by moving the family about 1820, or just prior, to Alabama.

1812 - Giles served in his Uncles unit during the War of 1812, a Pvt in Capt John Key's Company, Austin's Regiment. John was his mother's brother.
