Born in Woodbine to the late Samuel and Ella (Decker) Alexenberg, he was a lifetime resident here. He was an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, in which he as a Prisoner of War for 611 days. He was Acting Chief of Police in Woodbine, as well as a fireman. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 6257, and the New Jersey State Fireman's Association. He was president of the School Board, chairperson of the Cape May County Parks Commission, chairman of Open Spaces, and a member of the Cape May County Planning Board and Woodbine Municipal Authority.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sophia (Stanle) Alexenberg; his daughter, Gerri Schwartz; and his granddaughter, Elysia Sari Schwartz.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, where relatives and friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery.
