Elmer was born in Des Moines Township in Boone County, Iowa to John Elmer Smith and Mary 'Mae' Cecelia Breheny Smith. He was the 12th of 14 children. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters and by his wife of nearly 44 years, Vera A Larson Smith. He is survived by a daughter, Laurie K. Gottschalk of Ames IA, and a son Jay L Smith of Belmond, IA; and 2 grandchildren Carrie J and Guy E Gottschalk. Elmer resided in Belmond, Iowa but was hospitalized at Mason City at the time of his death.
