Poet. Born in New York City, on November 23, 1849, he was educated at Columbia University and later at the Roblot Institution in Paris. Known for his humorous and commercial poems, he wrote about international periodicals. Some of his best works included "Honey and Gall", "Shadows and Ideals", "The Witch of En-dor and Other Poems", "Dreams after Sunset" and "Fact and Fancy". During the mid-1870s, he wrote and edited a comic paper entitled "The Thistle", for the New York Times. He also was a talented musician, who wrote four comic operas for Off Broadway. His father, Francis H. Saltus, edited a four-volume edition of his poetical works after his death. Writer Edgar Evertson Saltus, was his younger half-brother.
