She was born April 12, 1925, to John and Lempi (Heikkinen) Niemi in Soudan. She grew up in Embarrass and graduated from Embarrass High School. She attended business college in Minneapolis and completed her LPN training at the Eveleth Vocational-Technical School. She married Jalmer K. Kallio on March 15, 1945, in Embarrass, where they made their home. She worked as an LPN for the Virginia Regional Medical Center for 16 years, worked as a Red Cross volunteer for many years, had been a cook at the Embarrass school and was Embarrass Township clerk for many years. She was a member of the Embarrass Apostolic Church and served on the church board, was a life member of the DAV Auxiliary and Sisu Tori.
Survivors include two sons, Duane (Rebecca) Kallio and David Kallio and special friend, Pat; three daughters, Bonita (Gary) Avikainen, Beverly (Randy) Thomas and Brenda (Scott) Champion; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mayme Ellen; two brothers, Marvin Niemi and Richard Hannula; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jalmer; two infant sisters, Barbara and baby Barbara; granddaughter Lisa; her parents, seven brothers and three sisters.
Burial in Waasa Cemetery in Waasa Township.
