He was born Nov. 16, 1925, at Lyons, the son of Ernest C. and Ora Kathryn Runkle Spaeny.
He graduated from Lyons High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. Donald was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a life member of both the Lysle Rishel Post #68 of the American Legion, where he was Past Commander, and the Hoisington V.F.W. Post #7428. He was a retired automotive industrial equipment representative for Stewart-Warner.
Donald married Alberta J. Humphrey on Jan. 4, 1948, in Hoisington. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, Michael C. Spaeny and wife Twila of Hutchinson, Mark A. Spaeny and wife Reja of Springfield, Mo., and Matthew J. Spaeny and wife Mykl of Yukon, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at Elliott Mortuary, with the Rev. Jim Rhaesa presiding. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with military honors provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Fort Riley, Kan. A register book may be signed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the family will greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m., all on Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. The casket will remain closed.
