Gladys Eunice Drake Byrd, 79, wife of the late Charles Harding Byrd Sr. of Ansonia passed away peacefully on Friday Jan. 18, 2008 at the Griffin Hospital. Mrs. Byrd was born in Ansonia on July 17, 1928, daughter of the late George T. and Bertha Ann Fultz Drake Sr. A lifelong resident of Ansonia, she had worked as a L.P.N. at the Hewitt Memorial Hospital in Shelton for 38 years until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the Assumption Church in Ansonia and active in many of their groups. She was also a member of the NAACP, Ansonia Senior Center and the Julian E. Taylor Scholaship Committee in Ansonia and also was know as an accomplished artist. She is survived by a son, Charles Harding Byrd Jr. and his wife Brenda J. of West Palm Beach, FL; a daughter Brenda J. Gibbs and her husband Jay of Woodbridge; a brother, George T. Drake Jr. of Shelton; a sister, Doris Matthews of Ansonia; grandchildren, Charles Harding Byrd III and his wife Helyn of Ansonia, Jay B. Gibbs II and Robert T. Gibbs of Woodbridge and Markus Vance of Tampa, FL; great-granddaughter, Alexa Marie Biggs of West Haven and severl nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. She was predeceased by a brother Vincent Drake and a sister Lorraine Sills. The Spinelli-Malerba-Ricciuti Funeral Home has been privileged to handle the arrangements. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.
