Old Soldier Dropped on Street While Delivering Mail Matter
Eli A. Winnemore, 63 years old, the letter carrier who fell unconcious at Eighth street and Girard avenue while covering his mail route is still in a critical condition at the Children's Homeopathic Hospital. he has been a letter carrier in this city since 1857 and did not miss a day's work because of illness until only a few weeks ago, when he was confined to his home at 213 North Sixtieth street.
On Friday last Winnemore, chafing under his doctor's orders to remain indoors, declared that he would start work. he managed to continue his duties until Saturday evening, when he collapsed. his failing in health is due to the fact that he has seven "minnie balls" in his body at present. he entered Co. K, 88th Pennsylvania Infantry at the age of seventeen as a drummer boy. He participated in twenty-three battles and at Petersburg, the flesh of his right arm was shot entirely away, making him unable to use the injured limb. in the battle of Gettysburg he was captured by the Confederate army but escaped during the confusion of the retreat of that army.
