Robert Lewis "Bob" Shafer, 89, of Ronceverte, entered the splendor of Heaven on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at his home in Ronceverte, following a brief illness. He was surrounded by loving family members.
Born September 19, 1922 at Caldwell, he was a son of the late George Edward and Flora Boone Shafer.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Holley, and brothers, Ovid, Royd, Earl, Paul, Harold, Billy and Joe Shafer.
Bob was a man of faith and an active member of Zion's Light Baptist Church. He sang with the Greenbrier Men's Quartet. Bob was a WWII Navy Veteran. He retired as a service man for VEPCO with over 35 years of service and was a Class A member of the IBEW Local 50.
Bob instilled in his family a love for music and for God. A highlight of his summer was hosting the Shafer Family Reunion at his homestead near Caldwell.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Susanna "Sue" Morgan Shafer, and four daughters, Rita Brunty (Mike) of Ronceverte, Susie Toothman (Bob) of Ronceverte, Barbara Gray (Billy) of Forest, Va., and Terri McDowell (Eddie) of Ronceverte. His loving grandchildren are: Michael Brunty (Kristin), Jessica Baker (Bert), Aaron Toothman (Rachel), Megan Hefner (Mike), Neil Toothman (Amanda), Leah Toothman, Will Gray, Leslie Gray, Jonathan McDowell, Rebekah McDowell, and Emily McDowell. Bringing him sunshine were his great-grandchildren: Ashley and Elena Brunty; Molli and Jake Baker; Logan, Anna and Ellie Toothman; Kate, Ryan and Sam Hefner; a sister, Anilee Deim (Jim) of Caldwell, W.Va.; and a brother, Ray Shafer of Caldwell, W.Va. Bob is also survived by sisters in-law, Mary Shafer, Sylvia Shafer, Ann Shafer, Faye Shafer, Evelyn Morgan and brothers in-law, Charles D. Holley and Raymond Toothman and good friend, Winfred Baker.
Services were on Sunday, December 18, 2011, at Zion's Light Baptist Church, Ronceverte, with the Revs. Gary Baker and Dudley Morgan officiating. Burial followed in the McLean Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Ronceverte.
