First wife of the Dr. Frederick Humphreys, famed founder of "Humphreys Pills". Born Cornelia Palmer, Mrs. Humphreys was the daughter of William and Hester E. Palmer. In 1837, at the age of 19, she married 21-year-old Frederick Humphreys. The young couple took up residence in Chillicothe, Ohio, the home of Mrs. Humphreys' father, and it was here that Frederick entered the Methodist Episcopal ministry, and their son, George, was born in 1839. Their 4-year marriage ended with Cornelia's death at age 23. The widowed Frederick then returned to his native New York with baby George. There he subsequently remarried, left the ministry, and embarked on the medical career that eventually made his name a household word.
