Elijah Taylor Cassel was ed­u­cat­ed at Shurtleff College in Alton, IL, where he was trained as a doc­tor. He prac­ticed medicine in Has­tings, Ne­bras­ka.

In approximately 1910, when he was more than sixty years old, Elijah left the field of medicine and en­tered the min­is­try. He was or­dained in Den­ver, Co­lo­ra­do. Elijah later pas­tored at the Beth­el Bap­tist Church, Den­ver (1911-7) & the First Bap­tist Church, Fort Mor­gan, Co­lo­ra­do (1919-21).

His wife was com­pos­er Flo­ra Hamilton Cas­sel. Together, they collaborated on gospel songs; Elijah wrote the lyrics which were then set to music by his wife.

After an illness lasting a period of nine months, Dr. E. Taylor Cassel , who died at his home on Long Beach Bonlevard, Wednesday, was given burial today.
Dr. Cassel, born in Indiana in November, 1849, was one of the best known composers of religious songs in the United States, as well as being an evangelist. Among the well hymns which he composed and published, are "The Kings Business", "Loyalty Into Christ", "Rouse Ye Reapers" and "He Will Abide With Me". At various times, he was heard with such religious leaders as Dwight L. Moody and Billy Sunday.
Dr. Cassel was a graduate of Shurtleff College at Alton, Ill. and was trained in the medical profession. After following this work for years, he gradually gave his time to religious work, particularly in Hastings,Neb. Then he entered evangelistic work in Denver.
For eight years he had been a resident of this city, Dr. Cassel leaves his widow, and two children, a son, Florus H. Cassel of Paia, Maui,Hawaii, and a daughter, Mrs. Fred Bynes of Denver, both from his first marriage.
Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church here this afternoon, Rev. Walter Pegg officiating. Burial was at Angelus Abby.
