Shanna Dee Hatch Reece Black, loving and beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, mentor and dear friend passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, incident to a well-lived life.
Born Chana Dee on August 12, 1924, in Salem, Utah, she was the second of three daughters to Chana Hatch Hansen and Lewis Andrew Hatch. She was preceded in death by her sisters Cora and Doris, her two step-sisters Beulah and Florence and step-brother Ralph Pierce.
She grew up in Salem, and after graduating from Spanish Fork High School changed her name to Shanna. She lived in Salem and Payson and during her childhood years helped on the family farm. For the past 41 years she lived in the Salt Lake Valley.
Shanna married Thomas Henry Reece in December 1944 in Payson. They later divorced in 1969; he passed away in Salt Lake City in December 2000. Together they raised six wonderful and loving children and a nephew whom she considered a son: Thomas Dee Reece (Mary Jane Friel) Murray; Gregory Lewis Reece (Patsy Adams) Salem; Rebecca Young (Don) Washington City; Nancy Gay Johnson (Tom) Draper; Janna Nagle, Midvale; Jillayne McAfee (Steven) West Jordan; and Bruce Sperry (Ronda) Kamas.
In May 1973 she married John Lythgoe Black. Together they made their home in Murray. John died in Salt Lake City in June 1999. Her step-children are: Jean Black; John Black (Karen); Christine Fairchild (Anthony); Parnell Black (Linda); and Donald Wayne Black.
Shanna worked professionally in the Salt Lake real estate market for many years and retired in 1993 as the administrative manager at CB Commercial Real Estate Group in Salt Lake City.
Following her retirement, Shanna doted unconditionally on her dozens of grandchildren, was a voracious reader, loved gardening and traveling, most notably to Hawaii. Among her favorite trips was a recent Caribbean cruise with her children.
One of her greatest joys in life came from cooking for family and hosting social events. With the help of her children she published her own cookbook of family recipes and holiday dishes. Fall trips to Park City to see the leaves change, Christmas prime rib and Easter celebrations are among the legacy of traditions she has left.
As a lover of fine culture, she held season tickets to the Utah Symphony and Opera and enjoyed live theater with her best friends. Shanna's love and passion for the arts has been passed down to her family with annual trips to the "Nutcracker."
She is survived by her children, 24 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins and myriad other "friends and family."
Shanna was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
