Mrs. Eunice Barker Matthews, wife of Paul Matthews, died at the home of her son Clyde, near Alva, Oklahoma, Nov. 8, 1905, nearly 60 years old. For more than a year she had been in failing health but until recently her condition was not thought to be serious. The day before she died she was taken to the home of her son, a short distance from her own home, where it was thought she could receive better attention. She rose from her chair, where she had been sitting, and walked across the room to lie down on a sofa, but on reaching it she fell back and expired in her husband's arms. Her son Clyde and daughter, Mrs. A. J. Ross, of Alva, were with her in her last moments, her other daughter, Mrs. W. E. Doughty of Ardmore, Okla., arriving soon after the mother's death. Eunice Barker was born in Van Buren county, Dec. 11, 1845; married to Paul Matthews, Jan. 29, 1868. Besides her husband and three children she leaves a brother, John Barker; a sister, Mrs. Wm. Sherod; a half brother, Joseph Barker, and a half sister, Mrs. Anna Rogers, all of Van Buren and Davis counties, Iowa. Early in life she joined the Presbyterian church. The funeral was preached at the residence of her son, where she died, by Rev. Mayo, and the body was laid away in the A. O. U. W. cemetery, Nov. 10, 1905.
