Joan "Joni" Louise Abernathy, 73, of Orem, Utah passed away on November 29, 2011 at home after a long illness.
She was born in Carson City, Michigan to Hugh Allen and Louise Eleanore (Potocny) Kobel. She married Ronald Edward Abernathy in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 26, 1965 and they were later sealed in the Oakland LDS Temple on October 11, 1977. They were residents of San Jose, California since 1973 until moving to Orem, Utah in 1989.
Joni worked as an administrative assistant at Dow Chemical Company in San Francisco prior to becoming a homemaker and raising her family. After moving to Utah, she was the owner and operator of a small business. She later became manager at Larsen's Health Food Store in Orem.
She was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after her conversion in 1976. She had many callings in the Primary, Young Women and Relief Society organizations.
Joan is survived by her children: Amber (Jason) Martinez of Campbell, California and Patricia (Michael) Read of Danbury, Connecticut; 5 grandchildren (Niko, Kyla, Madison, Emily and Jacob). The family kindly thanks Lisa Collison, her sons Christopher and Cameron, daughter-in-law Raechel and Anna Schooler, for their kind, compassionate and loving care during Joni's illness. We are eternally grateful for their love and support.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Stonewood 5th Ward, 450 South 100 West, Orem. Friends and family may call at a viewing held that morning from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be held in Orem City Cemetery.
