Wendell R. Akins, age 87, of Hamel, died at 11:43 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at his residence.

He was born on March 8, 1917, in Edwardsville, the son of the late Arshall Richmond/Richard Akins and Ida Myrtle 'Rose' Davis Akins.

He married Dorothy Schuette on July 24, 1943, the daughter of John and Victorial Thiel Schuette, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville. She survives.

Also surviving is a daughter: Janice Scherr and husband, Stephen of Hastings, N.E.; a son: Richard Akins of Edwardsville; a brother: Merle Akins of Bothall, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin daughters at birth; and a sister: Maxine Schuette.

Mr. Akins was a graduate of Belleville High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving from 1942 to 1945 during World War II and was in active duty in the China-India-Burma Theatre as a instrument specialist on B-29s. He was an engineer for American Airlines, retiring in 1980 to a Cattle Ranch in Checotah, Okla., moving back to the area in 1992. His memberships included St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 9 and from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, at Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville with Fr. John Corredato, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Collinsville.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Scherr, Scott Akins, Brian Akins and Peter Scherr.
