Grampa always maintained that his whole name was only H.C. When he applied for his passport, though, they refused to accept initials. He gave them the name of Harvey C. Chaffin, and that's what it says. There's no doubt in my mind that his name WAS actually Harvey C. Chaffin (for his paternal grandfather), and that he just never knew it.

He was also called "Pete" for most of his life. He told me that when he was about six years old, he was climbing the fence that separated their farm from the neighbouring one (he was quite a good distance from the house). As he jumped down, the fence pole ran up through the back of his overall straps and left him hanging helplessly. He knew that there was a mule named Pete in the field (he couldn't see him, though), so he started hollering "Pete, Pete" at the top of his lungs, hoping that the mule would come to him. He was left hanging there for a long time, and someone finally found him. The story circulated, and he was jestingly called "Pete" from then on. It just stuck, and it was used as much as HC.
