Anna Elizabeth Brashear, called Bessie, was born in Richland Parish, Louisiana. She married there on April 15, 1890, to Francis Neil McCorkle. They moved to Athens, Georgia in 1911 and lived there the rest of their lives. Bessie was the mother of 11 children, one of whom died at birth. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy which she joined on the service of her father, Charles Hall Brashear.

Bessie was very proud of her heritage and eagerly shared her family information with any of her relatives that were interested, including her grandson Moses M Coleman, Jr. After the deaths of two of Bessie's daughters, Marion Warlick and Bergna Ison, Moses came into possession of hundreds of Bessie's letters, newspaper clippings and photographs. In 2012, after years of research, he completed his book "Granny Bess," which contains most of the family data collected and preserved by his Granny Bess.
