Valentine Ferst was born in Schuylkill Co. PA in May of 1844. In the 1860 Census - I find him as a Farm Hand on the John Batdorf Farm in Swatara Twp., Lebanon Co. PA. Valentine served in the Civil War February 26, 1864, to May 11, 1865, with Company A, 93rd PA Infantry. He was discharged a year and a half later due a leg injury. In August of 1866 - Valentine was wed to Miss Mary Margaret "Polly" Eckler at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Pine Grove. He was twenty-two - she was thirty years of age. Valentine and Polly lived among her family helping to rear nieces and nephews. They had no children of their own. Valentine was laid to rest at the Old Manbeck Cemetery in Schuylkill Haven at the age of forty-four - It is now known as Zion Evangelical Cemetery. Polly died seven years later in 1907 at the Pottsville Hospital. She was 81yrs 7mo & 6dys old. She is interred at the family cemetery - St. Peters Lutheran - in Pine Grove.
