Henry Clay Barnard was born January 20, 1835, in the town of Dagsboro, State of Delaware, and died in St. Louis, August 8, 1898. His parents were Joesph S. and Sarah (Benson) Barnard, and the elder Barnard was a surveyor and dealer in land warrants, who came to St. Louis in 1864 [more like 1854, reflected by city Directories], and died here in 1866. The son received a collegiate education at Newark, Delaware, and soon after completing his course in study came to St.Louis, where he entered the employ of the wholesale drug firm of Barnard, Adams, & Peck, then doing business at the corner of Second Street and Washington Avenue. Leaving this wholesale drug house in 1858, he embarked in the retail drug business, establishing a store at the corner of Sixth and Morgan Streets. In 1863 he removed to the corner of Eleventh and Morgan Steets, at which place he did business for eleven years thereafter. From 1874 to 1876 his drug store was at 2714 Franklin Avenue, and in the year last named he removed to 4101 Easton Avenue. There he remained until 1880, when he retired from the drug trade and engaged in the real estate business, with which he was identified until his death. He was a successful business man, esteemed by all his contemporaries for his correct methods, his probity and high character. A republican in politics, and a Congregationalist in his religious affiliations, he took a good citizen's interest in public affairs, and a devout churchman's interest in all that pertained to his church and it's institutions. During the Civil War he served as a member of the Tenth Regiment of the enrolled militia of Missouri. He was at the time of his death a veteran member of the Order of Odd Fellows, affiliating with Excelsior Lodge No. 18 of that order in St. Louis. He married Miss Annie M. Robeson, daughter of Charles S. Robeson of Belvidere, New Jersey, who was an uncle of George M. Robeson,Secretary of the United States Navy during the administration of President Grant. The surviving members of Mr. Barnard's Family are Mrs. Barnard and two children, Sidney L. Barnard and Mrs. Carrie M. Hudson.
