Jacob Leedy was born 06-06-1819 in York Borough, York Co., PA, the first child born to Daniel Leedy, Sr. & Anna "Marie" (Stahl) Leedy.

Jacob Leedy was married 05-13-1841 by Rev. Benjamin Kellar at Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA to Catherine Pauley Gillespie. She was the daughter of John Gillespie. Jacob and Catherine Leedy later became the parents of 12 children.

By 1849, Jacob, his wife Catherine and 4 of their children moved from Gettysburg, PA to Baltimore, MD by stage coach.

It was in Baltimore, MD where Jacob Leedy started a business in 1849 as a merchant of tobacco and snuff along with his brother Samuel Leedy. By 1851, he was one of the 1st tobacco makers in the U. S. to recognize a union of workers. He specialized in the manufacture of cigars and is considered to be one of the nation's earliest tobacconist.

A staunch Union patriot, Jacob Leedy as a 42 year-old father, along with three of his eldest sons, joined the Union cause as a drum major at the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted 09-15-1861 at Baltimore, MD with F Regt., Purnell Legion, MD Volunteer Infantry and stayed with this unit until he was honorably discharged on 10-20-1862.

Following the battle of Gettysburg, Jacob Leedy and wife were among the 1st to enter the city, Mrs. Leedy being concerned for the well-being of her parents, brothers and sisters. With the help of a friend who was a railroad official, they were brought through the lines aboard a railroad box car carrying food and provisions from Baltimore, MD.

Upon returning to Baltimore, MD, they found their neighbors were troubled over their Union sympathies and so the family decided to move to Bryan, OH. Jacob established a cigar making shop here in 1870.

A decade later Jacob and Catherine followed their son, Charles Leedy, to Youngstown, OH where he started his business "Jacob Leedy & Sons, Tobacconists", located on the south side of W. Federal St., Youngstown, OH, remaining active as a tobacco maker and merchant until his retirement.
