On 21 Oct. 1834, William Sherrill purchased SE quarter of SE quarter of Section 15, Twp. 13 North, Range 3 West, for a total of 40 acres of land in Putnam Co., IN (US. General Land Office Records, 1796-1907)

On 13 Jan. 1837, Thomas M. Sherrell and Sally Sherrell, his wife, sold 40 acres, SE quarter of SW quarter of Section 15, Twp. 13 North, Range 3 West. (Putnam Co., IN Deed Book F, Pg 305). However, the land described in that deed was not purchased from the government until 15 May 1837, at which time it was purchased by Jacob Smith of Putnam Co., IN. The description in the Jan. 1837 deed was evidently erroneous. The intent was probably to sell the land that had been acquired by William Sherrill in 1834. No earlier deed is on file whereby Thomas M. and Sarah "Sally" Sherrill / Sherrell acquired that land from William Sherrill or any other individual(s).

No probate records are on file in Putnam Co., IN for William Sherrill. William may have died between 1834 and 1837 without leaving a wife or issue and he was probably a son of Thomas M. Sherrill.

Had William been Thomas' brother, most likely other siblings would have been living and they would have either join in the 1837 deed as grantors or separate deeds would have been recorded to sell their interest in the
property. More likely, William was a son of Thomas M. Sherrill and William had died unmarried before the 1837 deed when Thomas M. and Sally Sherrell sold the land.

ASSUMPTIONS: That William Sherrill was a son of Thomas M. Sherrill and that he probably d 1834-1837 without leaving a wife or issue.
