Maxine M. Cather, age 91, longtime resident of Berry Run near Flemington in Taylor County, passed away Tuesday, (Nov. 29, 2011), at Fitzwater's Assisted Living in Fairmont.
She was born in Harrison County, on Feb. 14, 1920, a daughter of the late Orr and Jessie Stuart Minear. Her husband, William L. Cather, preceded her in death on May 26, 1981. He was a longtime farmer and friend to many.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Linda Cather and William and Brenda Cather; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth "Betsy" and Everet "Ed" Bice; nine grandchildren and spouses, William "Butch" Cather, Carrie and James Fick, Steven Cather, Kristi and Chris Yanero, Brandi and Craig Hines, Brent "BJ" and Staci Cather, Kelly and Joseph Wolford, Russell and Sharon Bice, and Benjamin Bice and 12 great-grandchildren, Matthew Cather, Emily Cather, Owen Fick, Ruby Fick, Traijon Cather, Natalia Cather, Keri Yanero, Christopher Bice, Lacy Bice, Isaiah Bice, Sierra Bice and Melody Bice. Also, a dear friend, Betty Ross and one sister, Agnes Haslebacker, survive.
Three sisters preceded her in death, Margaret, Isabelle, and Peggy.
Maxine graduated from RW High School in 1936, attended Alderson-Broaddus College and graduated from Fairmont State College. She taught school at RW Grade School, Warwick County, Va. and spent most of her teaching career in Taylor County. She was a past member of Eastern Star, Professional Women's Club, Homemakers Club, Flemington Women's Club, Retired Teachers Association and a member of Flemington Baptist Church, where she held various offices, including trustee. Her greatest pleasure was making quilts (over 200) for her family. She loved shopping for fabric, referring to herself as a "fabri-holic." She also made many quilts for Ronald McDonald House in Morgantown. She was a good seamstress, making clothes for herself, children and grandchildren. Among some of her many projects were "Cabbage Patch" dolls (highly cherished by grandchildren), "Pound Puppies" and many needlework pictures. Maxine gardened up until age 85. She always said that canning wasn't one of her favorite things to do, but that she enjoyed the finished product. She shared produce with family and friends, sometimes traveling for many miles to do so. She regularly cooked Sunday dinners for her family, followed with homemade ice cream and mammaw cookies. For awhile, she was making two gallons of ice cream per week, much to her family's delight. She was a great cook until she decided that we all needed to be healthier and to lose weight. She started cooking low-fat, low-salt and everything went downhill from there. After dinner she usually had craftwork planned for the grandchildren. Many happy Sunday afternoons were spent at her home. After age 60, she traveled three times overseas with her friend, Doris Stout, and also visited many places here including Alaska, New York, California and Florida. She was a voracious reader and passed on her love for reading to her children. Her books were passed along to many friends and family. Maxine enjoyed her family and friends and was very helpful to everyone. She will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends at the Bradley J. Mayle Funeral Home in Flemington from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Chris Mullett officiating. Interment will follow in the Simpson Cemetery.
The Bradley J. Mayle Funeral Home is honored to serve the Cather family at this time.
