The Burlington Free Press Obituaries: January 1937

R. Leslie Abare 40, salesman for F. A. Baillargeon Motor Sales, died at his home, 91 Pearl Street, Burlington, Friday, January first, following an illness of six months. A World War veteran and member of the American Legion, the departed was accorded a full military funeral, with high mass requiem at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Monday, January fourth, the Rev. Charles A. Towne officiating. The burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, the committal prayers being read by Rev. B.R. Spears. A firing squad from Troop "A", Third Cavalry of Fort Ethan Allen, under Corporal Guevin, fired a volley at the grave, and Trumpeter Mendoza sounded taps. Full Military honors were accorded by Burlington Post No.2 of the American Legion, under the direction of J. Howard O'Neill. The bearers were: J. William Allard, Bingham C. LaBelle, Edward G. Mitchell, Frank Patenaude, James v. Green, and Thomas E. Shimeld, all members of the American Legion, Burlington. Mr. Abare is survived by his wife, nee Bernice McGivern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. McGivern of Rock Island, Que..;five children, Sheila, June, Margaret, Robert Leslie, Jr. and Roger; his father, Frank Abare; one sister, Miss Fannie Abare;, two brothers, Austin and Raymond Abare all of Burlington; also several nieces and nephews. Among those attending the funeral were: Mr .and Mrs. Clarence Lyons, Curtis and Lawrence McGivern, and Mrs. B. Monroe of Rock Island, Que.; Mrs Benjamin Heath, Derby Line, VT .
