St. Mark's German Lutheran Church hired the General Slocum Steamboat for their 17th Annual picnic to Long Island New York on June 15, 1904. Shortly after the boat with 1,700 passengers left the East 3rd street pier in New York City, it caught fire. 1,020 lives were lost with people burned to death or drowned.
