U.S. Congressman. Educated at Aaron Schuyler's Academy, he was a school teacher at Republic, Ohio. With the advent of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 49th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867, and practiced law in Kenton, Ohio. He was also a member of the Kenton Board of Education, a member of the Ohio State Senate (1879 to 1881), and was appointed by Ohio Governor Foster as judge of the court of common pleas in 1883. In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
