U.S. Congressman. Born the son of Ohio State Anthony General James Lawrence, he graduated from Jefferson College in 1835 and was successful in agricultural pursuits. Entering politics, he was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, in 1843 and served in the Ohio State Senate (1856 to 1857). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in mercantile pursuits. He was again a member of the Ohio State Senate (1867, 1885 to 1886) and served as president of the Ohio State Penitentiary until his death.
