CHERRYFIELD – Iona M. (Beal) Polk, 86, went home to be with the Lord Friday, Nov. 25, 2011. She was born July 7, 1925, in Jonesport, the daughter of James W. and Ora E. (Alley) Beal.

Iona married Carleton M. Polk in September 1942. They owned and operated Polk's General Store, Indian River, for 20 years, and then she converted it into a clothing store for several more years. She was a bookkeeper for Beals-Jonesport Co-op, served as a member of Addison School Board, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years at Jonesport Wesleyan Church, where she was a member for more than 60 years. When Iona moved to Cherryfield she began volunteering at Cherryfield Christian School, and later became a member of First Baptist Church of Cherryfield. Iona always could be found crocheting doilies and blankets. You could always find her picking people up to take to church and enjoyed her meetings at Narraguagus Estates.

She is survived by two daughters, Rose Marie (Polk) Norton and her husband, Dickie, of Addison and Jacquelene (Polk) Chandronnet and her husband, Leo, of North Carolina; a son, Warren James Polk and friend, Cindy, of Prospect Harbor; seven grandchildren, Richard Jr. and his wife, Kelly, Gayle and her fiance, Andy, Sherri and her friend, Anthony, Jewell and her husband, Dennis, Kristin and her fiance, Sean, Jamey and his wife, Annie, and Alex; five great-grandchildren, Rick III, Darcy, Austin, Whitney and Lydia; four great-great-grandchildren, Zander, Trinity, Cassidy Rose and Damon; several nieces and nephews. Iona is also survived by two very special friends, Edna Reynolds of Milbridge and Coleman Smith of York; along with her extended family and friends at Narraguagus Estates.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Carleton; an infant daughter, Jacquelene; her sister, June Smith, in August 2011; and a son-in-law, Ron Hurlbert.

Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. (Bangor Daily News posted 11/27/2011)
