Factors contributing to the large number of lives lost were overcrowding, an extraordinarily rapid spread of hot and toxic gases, panic and confusion, locked exit doors and public unfamiliarity with the location of available exits. This event contributed greatly both to the development of fire codes and advances in burn treatments. Legend has it that Jones initially escaped, but during several reentries into the club to help rescue others, suffered thermal injuries to his respiratory tract that cost him his life.
