Tirah Campaign British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. On October 20, 1897, during an attack at on the Dargai Heights, India, Private Vickery ran down the slope under heavy fire, rescued a wounded comrade and brought him back to safe cover. He subsequently distinguished himself in the Waran Valley, India, on November 16, 1897, killing three of the enemy who attacked him when he was separated from his company. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and promoted Corporal.
