Jeremiah Claypool was the son of a pioneering family, Jeremiah Claypool, Sr. and wife Lucinda Ellender (Cockrill) Claypool. He was born in Santa Rosa Township, where his parents had lived since at least 1870. Prior to Jeremiah Jr's birth, the family lived in the locale of Fairplay in Cosumnes Township in El Dorado County (gold country) and Jeremiah, Sr. was trying his hand at gold mining. This occupation did not last long. He tried his hand at dairy farming and reported that he was a book agent in the 1880 census.

Jeremiah's wife, Mollie Theresa Dearborn, derived from pioneer stock as well. She was the daughter of Moses Sweat Dearborn and Edith M. (Smith) Dearborn. Moses came from Maine to California in 1867 via the Isthmus of Panama. This was before the building of the Panama Canal. Her mother, Edith M. (Smith) Dearborn, California born, was the daughter of John Kinder Smith and Theresa M. (Banks) Smith, Illinois natives who had come to California between 1854 and 1856.

Both Jeremiah Sr. and Jr. are referred to as "Jerry" in all the census records I found for them.

Jerry Jr. worked first as a drug store clerk and then as a druggist. He died relatively young, at the age of 48, and his wife went on to marry Thomas F. Bechtel, a man 12 years her senior, a native of Michigan. In the 1930 census record, neither one is working, and I have not checked into his background, so I am not sure of his occupation.

It does not appear that Mollie and Jerry had any children before he died. There is a notation on Mollie's mother's memorial page which is rather cryptic which indicates that an infant daughter of Mrs. J.W. Claypool SR. is buried with her. It doesn't make much sense, since the Dearborns were not actually related to Jerry Claypool Senior. It is more likely that their infant granddaughter from Mollie (Dearborn) Claypool is in the grave with Edith (Smith) Dearborn. More research is needed on that score.

Jeremiah Walter Claypool, Jr. is buried in the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery amongst other relatives.
