Son of Luther Parris and Lurline Patton Byars.
MARION - Memorial services for Pfc. Luther P. "Pat" Byars Jr., who was reported killed in action in Normandy June 8, will be held at the Methodist Church at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon, August 13. The Rev. B. L. Knight, Dr. T. C. Easterling and Clark Willcox will make brief talks. E. B. Hamer of the local American Legion post will present the flag to Mrs. L. P. Byars, mother of the young infantryman.
Private Byars, 20, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Byars. They have two other children, a daughter, Miss Lurline Byars and a son, Johnnie Byars.

MARION - An impressive memorial service was held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church for Pfc. Luther P. (Pat) Byars Jr. who was killed in action in Normandy, June 8. The church was filled to capacity with those who came from near and far to pay final tribute to the young infantryman who died for his country.
The State Guard of Marion County attended in a body. The alter was arranged beautifully with white gladioli and ferns. Special programs of patriotic design were printed for the occasion. A choir, representative of all the local churches, offered appropriate musical selections.
Following a prayer by the Rev. B. L. Knight, the Rev. B. F. Allen read the scripture. In behalf of the government of the United States, E. B. Hamer, of the Crawford-Monroe Post of the American Legion, presented the flag to Mrs. L. P. Byars, mother of Private Byars. Dr. T. C. Easterling, Clark Willcox and the Rev. B. L. Knight made brief talks of tribute. A congregational hymn was sung, after which, Mrs. Hamer sounded Taps on the organ.
Private Byars, 20, was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Byars. He was a graduate of Marion high school and had attended Clemson College for two years before entering the Army.

MARION - Delayed committal rites for Pfc. Luther P. Byars Jr., 20, were conducted at 4 o'clock Tuesday, December 6 from the graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Julius E. Clark of the Marion Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. B. F. Allen of the Marion Baptist Church.
Pvt. Byars was killed in action June 8, 1944 during the invasion of France. He volunteered for the Army in April 1943 while a sophomore at Clemson College and had been overseas about six months before taking part in the invasion of the continent.
