Margery (Margaret) Brasuel a longtime resident of Cuba, NM, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 in Hood River, Ore. She was 94 years old. Margaret Evelyn Tankersley was born on April 23, 1916 in Corsicana, Tex. Her family later moved to Canyon, Tex., where she attended school and graduated from West Texas State. While in high school, she met her future husband, Leonard Brasuel, and they married in 1939. After living in several towns throughout New Mexico, including Mills, Roy, Santa Fe, and Taos, they settled in Cuba in 1951, where they raised their three children, Leonard, Mary-Ethel and Murphy. A teacher, she taught for over 25 years in the Cuba schools, and after she retired, she often tutored students to help them pass their SATs. Margery loved Cuba and loved living in New Mexico. She was active in many clubs and enjoyed square dancing and reading. In the spring and summer, she could often be found working in her terraced flower garden, which bloomed in every color imaginable. She was on the Board of the Cuba Credit Union and volunteered at the public library, where she kept a stash of change to "lend" to children when they had unanticipated fines on their books. For her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she always had a big hug and a warm snickerdoodle. Her husband; a son, Murphy Brasuel; and her sister, Louise Jones, preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter, Mary-Ethel Foley of Hood River, Ore.; her son, Leonard Brasuel of Denver, Colo.; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Brasuel of Rio Rancho, NM. Her five grandchildren, Margaret, Nancy, Lizzie, Murphy and Ana feel lucky that she lived long enough to know her eight great-grandchildren, Christopher, Leo, Sarah, Max, Miles, Mikey, Dash and Stella. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at the Cuba Presbyterian Church in Cuba, NM.
