U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and proceeded to practice law in Batavia, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney of Batavia, (1845-49) and during the Mexican-American War, served as a 2nd Lieutenant of Company C, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he was a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1850-52) and elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving (1859-61). With the advent of the Civil War, he was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel of the 59th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, serving (1861-63). He then resumed the practice of law until his death.
